Breakfast

Waffles With Bacony Chickpeas & Vegan Cheese Sauce (gf)

Don’t underestimate a good brunch at the weekend. Due to my yoga-teaching early mornings and the fact that I like (‘prefer’ is maybe a better choice of word here) to get up and practice before teaching; Theresa and I don’t see much of each other on weekdays. She arrives back from the office after 6pm…

Granola

Granola is one of those things that has somehow got lost mid-atlantic ocean on the way over to Europe from North America.  Or, maybe in typical English fashion, it was rejected as too luxurious or too indulgent compared to it’s poorer cousin porridge.   It never fails to surprise me how you can go one…

Buckwheat Waffles

Vegan buckwheat waffles, maple syrup and cashew cream…heaven on a plate   Not much to say about this one really, apparently it was very easy to make and we were so surprised at how fast they were to make, not to mention totally scrumptious.  We could eat double this amount every day if we weren’t…

Tofu Scramble

This was our second attempt at tofu scramble, and as the first one was so successful we were worried that it couldn’t be duplicated, needlessly as it turned out.   The secret to our scramble was to combine both pressed and silken tofus, we accompanied the meal by tempeh bacon, baked individual oven hash browns, toast…

Soups

Russian Borscht

We’re reaching the zenith of winter now, when days are pretty much drawn in, weather (at least in London) is overcast and drab, which gives us a perfect opportunity to stay in, get cosy and cook up warming meals that satisfy the soul.

Turkish Red Lentil Soup

You always have to think of some kind of spiel before you give the recipe out. Seems like an afterthought on most blogs. Some waffle about their dog being sick or the cat learning a new trick. But it’s always followed by the hard sell; hold little time and effort it takes to make the…

Creamy Pumpkin and Lentil Soup

Looking back on our site and filling in the gaps to our repertoire as we prepare to try and make it more professional for the launch of our new health-food shop in the new year. God knows, it did need it, some of the pictures were incredibly bad, especially in the light (no pun intended)…

Persian Mung Bean and Rice Soup (Ash-e-Sholeh)

This recipe is one of those staples for the winter months, especially when you’re facing temperatures hovering around zero degrees for the week, like we are right now in London. Originally from the fantastic book Veggiestan by Sally Butcher who owns a great deli near us selling all the Middle-Eastern ingredients you could possibly need. I…

Salads

Mexican black bean bowl

Sometimes a bowl of carefully prepared ingredients in separate sections presents a nice change to a regular mixed salad. There can be something more sophisticated to tasting each ingredient on it’s own and then choosing, with each new mouthful, what to pair it with.

Lentil and spelt berry salad with roasted pumpkin and beetroot

Another seasonally appropriate salad. This is a good main-course in itself. The lentils pack good protein and the spelt berries are easily digestible and nice and toothsome (if thats not a word your granny would use..?).

Cabbage with Miso “Floating Cloud” Dressing

We seem to be having cabbage a lot lately, I guess it’s in place of other leafy greens like kale, which doesn’t grow here, it’s not cold enough ( I really really miss it) and spinach, which is also rare in Tarifa market, although sometimes if we ask for it it comes the next day. …

MAIN COURSES

Spelt Fusili with Roasted Pumpkin Vegan-Cream Sauce

What a season for fruit and veg! With the art of summer’s produce still coming through, now early autumn crops are upon us too. Expect a lot of pumpkin and apple recipes coming up…

Polenta Gratin with Spinach and Tofu in a Tomato Sauce

Another creation of genius. Well, I’m sure it’s been done before, but we’ve never done it, so I got my rightful quotient of praise from Theresa. You know how much men like and need praise.  I have to admit I have sought and found inspiration for this in the wonderful Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone by…

Tempeh Meatloaf Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving seems to be slowly creeping over here – at very least the craziness of Black Friday has this year.   But, having a Canadian in the family (Theresa, you know who you are) we have right to celebrate it here in Keen’s kitchen, whether it’s a fully fledged holiday here or simply just…

Sesame Honey Tofu

This is one of the best tofu’s I’ve done in a long time and also one of the simplest. The combination of sweet and sour goes a long way in the satisfaction stakes I find. For that reason just this one item and rice, maybe a little green on the side is a perfect meal…

SWEET TREATS

Raspberry Polenta Cake

A really unique and simple cake using polenta flour which lends a particular crumb and texture. Of course, this is more of a healthful and whole grain cake than just a regular flour one. Doesn’t mean you can eat loads of it, but probably a bit more than normal, surely.

Thumbprint Cookies

OK. It’s become a long sabbatical from this site. I have been posting a lot on other social media, but for those of you that want something more old fashioned, here is a quick cookie recipe. I’ll keep it short as I’m still testing the new wordpress format and already lost two posts today. Good…

Raw Caramel Slice

Firstly, apologies for being so negligent in keeping this food-page up to date in the last month. We’ve been teaching in Goa, a small holiday in Kerala, and then suffering a week of dealing with jet-lag whilst still getting up at 2am to practice before teaching at 6am my regular class back in London. But…

Tofu Strawberry Cream Pie

It should be summer here, but instead we have had a kind of Noah’s-Ark like week of rain.  This was taken before that, when we had good weather and we were starting to get out into the garden at our new flat and get to work on planting some herbs, salad and vegetables.  The only…
